History of Vellamo
The Rääveli chain of lakes from Heinola to Pertunmaa is peculiar in its origin compared to other Finnish lakes. The waterway is almost 30 km long and at its broadest about 1 km. According to geological research the lakes originate in a deep gap between two different rock foundations, and the bottom of this gap is filled with broken rock down to unknown depths.
Before the Ice Age the gap with its broken rock bottom was filled with water from the primeval sea. Later the Ice Age further formed the lakes, and when the ice melted new elements entered the water. After the Ice Age rains brought more and more water into the gap. Gradually a compact water-proof layer settled on the gap. The water was sealed into this reservoir for thousands of years, slowly gaining the balance it has today. You might say it has ripened in peace far away from the pollutants of today.
Vellamo is Nitrate free indicating a pristine source.
